Bowl cleaning alert!

I was at a customers home yesterday and she told me of the most amazing toilet bowl cleaner.

Efferdent denture cleaner!

I haven’t tried this out yet, but I will!

In the meantime, has anyone else out there used this? If you have I’d like to have you post a comment about your experience.

If anyone has any tips on cleaning plumbing let us know.

P.S. If you really want to save time and money, you can now clean your dentures in the toilet bowl. Just make sure to retrieve your teeth before you flush! Cause that will cost you lots of time and money!

Manure… An interesting, albeit slightly distasteful fact

Manure : In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas of course. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.

Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction “Stow High In Transit” on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ‘ S.H.I.T ‘ (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

Neither did I.

I had always thought it was a golf term.

How to repair a plastic toilet flange

This shows how to repair a plastic closet flange (toilet flange). There are lots of different types of closet flanges this will work well with the all plastic type, the plastic hub with a rotted steel ring, and a lead flange. There are better ways to do lead flange repairs but this is one of the easier and cheaper methods I employ. This is a PVC flange, It works exactly the same on a ABS flange. ABS is the black plastic used for plumbing in most areas of the USA.

How to change a supply valve

This video shows how to change a supply valve to a toilet http://photonsoup.com/my-stable/gopro-hero2/ sink. This demo is only for 5/8″ compression valves, usually used on copper.

This shows how to change a supply valve that attaches to the supply pipe with a 5/8″ compression fitting. This is how most supply valves attach to copper pipe. Some plumbers will use them on CPVC pipe, and PEX pipe. This one is PEX, but it is the same procedure for any type of pipe. Unless the thread pattern on the old valve is different from the new one. If that is the case you must remove the old nut and ferrule. Lots to cover on that topic!

The procedure is the same for angle stops and straight stops. its the same for toilets and sink supply lines

The Diaper Scouts

Well, what do expect when you let a plumber be the Scoutmaster? Here is our troop working on the Diapering merit badge.

NO CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, OK, a Scout is honest, there really is NO merit badge for changing diapers!!! But maybe there should be a babysitting badge?

I heard about this game from my wife, who got to play it at a baby shower. Since all 12 to 15 year old boys love gross disgusting things, I thought it was a perfect game for them to play. They really did enjoy it, and it did not diminish their appetites one bit. They ate all of the diaper contents in a heartbeat.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME:

Get as many different kinds of chocolate bars as possible Snickers, Crunch, Mr Goodbar, Krackle, Dark Chocolate, etc.

Get a diaper for each candy bar, label the diapers 1-2-3…. or A-B-C……

Put a candy bar inside of a diaper and put it in a microwave oven and melt the candy bar, kinda squish it around before it sets up.

Pass the diapers around and have the contestants identify what kind of chocolate bar is inside each diaper.

The one with the most correct wins! I had a second bar of each type for 1st prize, if its a tie they split the pot. I have a bunch of the small Halloween size bars for the rest of the group to share. And of course anybody brave enough to eat a dirty diaper, gets one!

Mobile home water heater

Most of the time when you have to remove/replace a water heater in a mobile home there are water and gas pipes blocking the way. you could take the time to remove all these pipes or you can lift the water heater over them. This little video shows how I use a small collsible platform by Werner, which I bought at Ace Hardware to lift the water heater onto. Then just lay it down on the platform and the whole bottom part of the tank pivots up and clears all the pipes.

This works really well for one person, which is good because even if you have a helper, there usually isn’t enough room to get two people in the space available. I also have a small block and tackle that I attach at the top of the closet containing the water heater. Then lift the water heater up above the piping, swing it out into the open and lower it to the floor. Thats the way I usually do it on the ones that have an outside access panel. I’ll make a video next time I have to change one. I hope its not until next spring!
